Journal - 1 for January 11 to January 15, 2010

This week we learned about building a Wiki space site. It operates a lot like the Google site we learned how to create last week. It is easy to edit pages and move things around on both of them. Signing up for an account on both sites is extremely simple, which is good. They are both interesting ways of creating your own website, but I think I prefer the look of my Google site. The most complicated task we learned this week was how to link the two websites together. Now, people can easily jump between my Google site and Wiki space site. These websites are very useful for creating a personal website or a website based on a particular interest. Either way, the website can be very useful for staying in contact with others and informing a large mass of people about something. Both a Google site and a Wiki space site can be very useful in the future. As an educator, the sites can serve as a means of communicating with my students and their families to let them know what is going on in my classroom. For the content area of social studies, one of these sites can be used to provide my students with additional information in the form of links to websites, pictures, and videos connected to the current history unit. It will be great for furthering the interests of students on particular historical individuals and events. I wonder though, how many educators have their own websites?

Later in the week, we covered the first chapter of the textbook during a presentation by a student. The chapter discusses the uses of Web 2.0 tools and the need for greater technological education in the United States. This education is necessary for the economy of the United States to stay competitive with the rest of the world. As future educators, it will be up to teachers like me to incorporate the education of Web 2.0 tools along with other types of technology into the instruction of our content areas. I was not pleased with the information concerning the United States only ranking 20th in broadband access. Educating students about technology may not be too easy with the lack of technology students have at home. How can we expand the use of broadband in the United States?
